They are usually water cooled and made of copper, which has high thermal conductivity and is resistant to corrosion and erosion. Copper rods play a key role in the operation of blast furnaces because they help control the temperature and chemical reactions within the furnace. The furnace walls are in strategic locations within the furnace, such as near tuyeres (nozzles that inject air into the furnace) and furnace edges (the lower part of the furnace where iron ore initially melts). The hydrocooling system in the copper bar helps prevent overheating and damage to the furnace lining. Bars also help distribute heat more evenly throughout the furnace, improving the efficiency of the smelting process.
