Gravity die casting is a permanent mold casting process in which molten metal is poured from a container or ladle into a mold. There are no forces other than gravity to fill the cavity, and filling can be controlled by tilting the mold. Undercuts and cavities can be incorporated into component forms using sand cores. Due to the rapid solidification, the process has a better surface finish than sand casting as well as better mechanical properties. In addition, the process has a higher casting rate than aluminum sand casting, but the cost of metal molds is higher than that of sand molds. Advantages of this process include the possibility of low porosity and the possibility of obtaining fine particle sizes. The process requires less finishing and trimming than sand casting, and gravity die casting tends to produce a higher quality product. Gravity die casting production methods are generally less cost-effective for mold making than sand casting. Gravity casting of aluminum alloys involves pouring molten aluminum into a cavity and then tilting the entire mold. The aluminum then solidifies naturally to form a part. Manufacturers often invest in well-designed and well-machined permanent molds, which give valuable consistency to the finished product. Surface details can be reliably reproduced thanks to the long-term reusability of the molds, which are often made from durable materials such as gray cast iron, graphite, and stainless steel. While gravity casting is best suited for one-piece molds with simple shapes, it can also efficiently produce more complex castings. Gravity casting is widely used in almost every area of the modern world and plays an important role in the automotive industry. From cylinder heads to engine mounts, many light alloy automotive components are manufactured by gravity die casting.
