Ammonium tungstate reacts with hydrogen sulfide gas and precipitates ammonium tetrathionate. The latter is then roasted at high temperature and decomposed into tungsten disulfide.

Tungsten disulfide is a new type of solid lubricant, suitable for lubrication under high temperature, high pressure, high load and high vacuum conditions. It can be added to engineering plastics to make self-lubricating components, or mixed with volatile solvents and sprayed on metal surfaces to improve die life and workpiece finish in stamping and forging.
