NDIR gas sensors use the infrared absorption properties of gas molecules (e.g., CO2) to calculate their concentration. Therefore, the NDIR gas sensor is equipped with an infrared light source that emits infrared rays and an infrared sensor that detects infrared rays. The infrared light is directed at the gas in the measuring tube and part of the light is absorbed by the gas molecules to be measured. Subsequently, the rest of the infrared light hits the filter and reaches the infrared detector. Ideally, only the gas to be measured absorbs light of the corresponding wavelength. However, since the gas mixture contains a variety of gases, the absorption regions may overlap, thus enhancing cross sensitivity. The interference part must either be tested for compensation (to avoid false measurements) or avoided by clever selection of spectral ranges. With the NDIR sensor, more than 100 different gases can be detected from ppm to percentage. In many applications, this is the preferred method because the measurement method is non-contact and non-consuming.

Infrared Gas Sensors utilize only part of the infrared spectrum, corresponding to wavelengths which are absorbed by the gas to be detected. The optical bandwidth of a laser source is sufficiently narrow for it to be used directly, but with wideband sources such as thermal sources or even LED’s some additional wavelength selection in the optical path is required to achieve usable sensitivity and selectivity. The optical bandwidth of a sensor should ideally be matched to the absorption band of the gas (matching system bandwidth to the information carrying bandwidth) which is typically in the tens or low hundreds of nanometers.
