It has a density of 2.34 g/cm3 and sublimates when heated, but can melt when heated to 590°C under a pressure of 4300 KPa. Red phosphorus is an allotrope of phosphorus with the chemical formula P. Red phosphorus is not common in nature. It is usually converted from white phosphorus (another allotrope of phosphorus) by heating it to 260°C in an airtight condition. This process is also called the "thermal conversion" of white phosphorus. The physical properties of red phosphorus include: it is a purple-red or slightly brown amorphous powder, odorless, non-toxic, but with a metallic luster. Red phosphorus has a higher density than white phosphorus and is insoluble in water or organic solvents such as carbon disulfide. In air, the chemical properties of red phosphorus are relatively stable, but it can also show strong reactivity at high temperatures or when encountering strong oxidants.
